Avengers Original Boxed set - 1996

This set would include all the Avengers that were originally in the comics as they appeared in the comics. There is no Captain America in this set, as he did not join the Avengers until a couple issues down the line when he replaced the Incredible Hulk on the team. This set is very similar to the two X-Men sets that were released. Like the X-Men sets, this set contained some very detailed figures that were excellent likenesses of the characters. This set was aimed more towards collectors.

Ant Man

A small Antman is included in this set as well. He is very well articulated for his size and very detailed as well. Toybiz did a good job with this one, as the even made his helmet removable, which was a very nice touch.

Figure ability: None
Accessories: Helmet, Ant, Ant, Ant, Ant, Ant

Giant Man

This Giant Man figure is much bigger than the other figures in the set because he is supposed to be. It kind of offsets the fact that Antman and Wasp are so small. The detail on this figure is pretty good, as is his paint and sculpt. Articulation-wise he is very good with many points of articulation. This figure is the only one in the set that fits in decently with the 6 inch scale besides Ant-Man and Wasp, and would be repainted years later in Marvel Legends Series 4. The only bad thing is his antenna can break off somewhat easily.

Hulk

As far as Hulk figures go, this one is one of the smaller ones. This Hulk is also pretty detailed in its paint job, but the multitone green shading ends up being very heavy. Articulation-wise, this figure is very well done. The sculpt is very good too, but a bit short. This figure also fits in with the Hulk toyline pretty well.

Iron Man

This Iron Man is how he appeared in the comics in his original bulky armor after painting it gold in his second appearance. The figure is very detailed and looks just like he did back then. The helmet of the figure is also removable, which is a very nice touch and the Tony Stark head is newer. Along with being a great choice for the set, he fits in with other Iron Man figures from around the same time, only he does not come with interchangeable pieces like previous figures. The figure also has decent articulation as well, although his skirt thing that comes down over his upper legs limits his leg movement. There are two versions of this figure, a plain dull one as pictured here and a shiny gold version. Both versions were distributed equally. The version in the prototype is somewhere between the two versions, in terms of appearance.

This is just the shiny version of the figure. Nothing else is different.

Thor

Another great Thor figure, this would probably be the best Thor released in the 5 inch scale. This figure is similar to the Avengers Reborn figure only smaller and less animated-looking. The face sculpt does look a bit childlike though. The figure features great articulation and even better detail. The helmet and silver discs on his chest are chromed, and his cape is cloth. Another nice touch is his hammer that has words inscribed on it. This Thor is to the scale of normal figures in the Marvel lines at that time.

Figure ability: None
Accessories: Mjolnir hammer

Wasp

The Wasp in this set is a lot like the Antman in this set. The figure is very small but very detailed. She also has a decent amount of articulation since she is so small. She doesn't have any removable accessories like Antman though. Still, she looks good next to other Avengers due to her small size.
